internet, network tools, remote control

file sharing, cloud, encryption

Filesharing and cloudstorage: is quite difficult with windows (It does simply not always work) but it is usefull for transfering measurement files without the help of athena (for larger stuff) For a purely local network a router is needed but and then Lanshark http://lanshark.29a.ch/  or p300 does really help http://p300.eu/

who likes it more sophisticated can set up his own ftp server: software for this excits plenty:  I used:   the server from http://filezilla-project.org/ or the server from http://tftpd32.jounin.net/

I heard about the mini sftp from http://www.coreftp.com/server/

to make your own network assisted storage (a networkdrive) with FreeNAS or company cloudservices(but be carefull about the Data-safety here!)   http://www.freenas.org/

You can set your own cloud server relatively easy with owncloud   http://owncloud.org or use company clouds (just a few it is difficult to keep track) https://www.dropbox.com, https://www.sugarsync.com/, http://www.box.com/

Data encryption for clouds

Veracrypt creates big container files that can be used as external drives, however even small changes need to sync the whole container that why this is a good choice for local storage but not for clouds  https://www.veracrypt.fr/code/VeraCrypt/

A better way however is to encrypt all the files separately with a tool like cryptomator https://cryptomator.org

Remote Control

nearly all operating systems offer a inbuild version but as soon as you need to cross borders you want to choose something different: Be aware by using non opensource tools for remote control you grant the company access to the pc you are controlling, so its all a question of trust! VNC for remote controlling is the tool of the trade!

http://www.tightvnc.com/

This is a new find, pretty cool and without installation https://tigervnc.org

One trick here is to use dyndns http://www.dyndns.com/ if the PC changes ip adress but all our PC’s don’t! For private use teamviewer is nice. Th definition from teamviewer is “whatever you do not get payed for”. So some short remote help this might be a nice choice

For windows there is another tools without installation http://www.ammyy.com/en/

Instant screen sharing offers some fast way to look on the screen (no control) http://www.screenleap.com/

For teachers there is a nice little tool that allows the control of the other pc’s in the system and allows screen sharing. http://italc.sourceforge.net/

Turn an raspberry pi with camera into a remote observation studio https://raspberry-valley.azurewebsites.net/MotionEye-OS/

For remotely controlling a computer a totally different approach is to use a KVM (keyboard, video mouse) device. A small raspberry pi is connected to a computer via HDMI cable (it tell the computer that it is a monitor) and a useb connection (it tells the computer that it is a keyboard and a mouse) then the remote connection happens to the raspberry pi and the other computer can be controlled as if one sits in front of it. I build one and it works smoothly. https://pikvm.org

Remote Linux work

One of the classical tools is Putty http://www.putty.org/

I stumbled recently over one alternative that seems better in many ways http://mobaxterm.mobatek.net/download.html

Wikis

I create small webpages with partners to communicate information. This works like a mini wiki and is free with a google account. http://www.google.com/sites/index.html

important is here to back up yours sites from time to time (you never know when google asks money for it) for this http://code.google.com/p/google-sites-liberation/ is extremly helpful

for sorting your mind a small wiki on your pc is helpful http://wikidpad.sourceforge.net/

for more projects you should choose the right platform here http://www.wikimatrix.org/

Small usefull tools:

Little tool to make online surveys for free (maybe for course feedbacks and similar things)  http://www.surveymonkey.com/

Tool that downloads the whole webpage (including all subpages) for local storage http://www.httrack.com/

Little tool to share a white board online, no installation works in browser, just share the address for a specific board http://cosketch.com/ or http://www.scriblink.com/

Little tool to make scheduling for meetings easy:  http://www.doodle.com/

Little webpage that removes banners and other things from other webpages for better printing   http://www.printwhatyoulike.com/

Annoyed by all the banner clicking? Why not use this tool to do that for you and use incognito mode to delete all the cookies directly. https://www.i-dont-care-about-cookies.eu

QR-codes:

For the mobile phone one of the most versatile tools for creating or reading qr codes is QRdroid https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=la.droid.qr&hl=enOn the PC there are two general ways.

Simple QR codes can easily be generated using freely available online tools like:

QR Monkey https://www.qrcode-monkey.com/ or QR code generator http://www.qr-code-generator.com/

For more options

I you already use Inkscape (see 2 plotting and poster) the function is build in Extensions > Render > Barcode > QR Code

a small freeware tool like the portable QR code generator (in german!) https://sites.google.com/site/qrcodeforwn/ is very useful.

Interesting is also this tool (free for personal use only) since it can bind in logos in the code  https://qrc-designer.de/?p=home&hl=en

There is a whole community creating so called Halftone QR codes that combine pictures with QR codes and that I find very interesting, see for example this project page for more info https://github.com/fangj/Halftone-QRCode-Generator

VPN to Lund

For members of the Lund University network this can be accessed from the outside with vpn http://www.ldc.lu.se/support/naetverk/vpn

but easier is to download the fortinet client from here http://edit.info.lu.se/images/OOiS/images_LDC/SslvpnClient.exe

and login with servername:”connect.lu.se:443 “ and your Lucat id/password

Eduroam for European Universities: Interesting feature might be the “eduroam access” That means every educational institution in Europe gives you free W-lan access with the connection over Lund. So you slip to run in every university to the network administrator to get a free access. In many this is just a wifi that you can sign up to. I found this extremely usefull all over europe.

For some  you need to download and install: http://eduroamclient.srv.lu.se/Eduroam.zip (works only from university network! So use the vpn from before)  LDC gives instructions for the installation here: https://support.comaround.se/content/guide/textGuide.aspx?guideID=139166

Safety

This link goes to an article in the german magazin C’t that links a lot of interesting tools for checking for safety problems: https://www.heise.de/select/ct/2022/16/softlinks/ygfs?wt_mc=pred.red.ct.ct162022.138.softlink.softlink
